The Trespasser[edit | edit source]
- Thurmond notices "someone watching [them] work" in a balcony box toward the back of the theater. Fifteen minutes later, the same person walks across the front of the house, which Thurmond claims is a distraction to the rehearsal. The trespasser is stated to be "rather short, and completely bald, but very well dressed". He is also stated to be "very, very pale", and moved with a "strange slowness".
- Royce Palmer alerts the company to the fact that the strange gentleman had wandered into the dressing rooms, where he say before a large mirror "staring vacantly into space, seeming quite sick". He repeated softly the words "My head hurts", and Thurmond notices blood on the man's shirt collar. On approaching the man to offer help, Thurmond states the man flinched and whispered the words "You'll find him in the barn". Thurmond also states that the man's hands are completely streaked with blood, and in them lay a human brain, "naked and coated with blood as if it had been torn from a man that very moment". Thurmond rushed from the dressing room. On returning to the dressing room...
